Google Canada’s Chris O’Neill on tech entrepreneurship and moonshot thinking in Vancouver

With a packed house at the Hotel Vancouver on May 28, the Vancouver Board of Trade hosted Google Canada’s managing director, Chris O’Neill, for a talk on big-picture tech trends. Born in rural Ontario, O’Neill was introduced to business early, through his parents’ small Canadian Tire franchise, but cut his teeth in Silicon Valley. I sat down with him after the event to discuss the future of technology business and entrepreneurship in Vancouver.

Even though the entrepreneur with the distinctive, eponymous shoe empire takes his coffee black and uses an iPhone, he’s anything but status quo

When do you get your best ideas? Sleeping

What is your greatest extravagance? Can’t say... it’s too red and too fast.

What is your greatest regret? Believing I was not worthy.

What do you never travel without? My wife

How do you take your coffee? Mood dependent, but normally black.

Pride of ownership is everything to the entrepreneur, but if the business is successful, most can only take it so far alone

Seven years after founding Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Vancouver, president and CEO Ross McCredie found himself at a crossroads: “What I recognized is that we had grown quite a bit and I wasn’t going to be able to take it on my own to what we believed we were going toward.”

For Roger Hardy, leadership is about getting stuff done

Roger Hardy, the co-founder and CEO of Clearly Contacts Ltd., faced what could have been a Steve Jobs-ian moment: the gala opening of the first bricks-and-mortar retail showroom for his 13-year-old company. A physical store on Vancouver’s Robson Street signalled a radical new direction for what had been a strictly online company—the biggest shift since ClearlyContacts.ca began selling eyeglasses in 2008, in addition to contact lenses.
